A 43-year-old man died today from an apparent, self-inflicted gunshot wound following a standoff with San Angelo Police Department officers near Lamar Elementary.
A heavy police presence was reported near the school late this morning in response to a gunman who had barricaded himself in a nearby residence.
The presence of police and tactical units prompted Lamar Elementary to institute SECURE protocols.
The SAPD later said at a news conference that there was no danger to students of school personnel during the standoff.
The man had a history of escalating violence and had threatened to kill his spouse, according to a press conference later held by the SAPD.
His spouse escaped unharmed, and police later located the individual deceased from a gunshot wound.
The San Angelo Police Department had obtained an arrest warrant, and was negotiating with the man when he shot himself.
