Angelo State Basketball: Rams Win Late, Belles Fall to Falcons of UT-Permian Basin

Hot shooting by UT Permian Basin proved too much for the Angelo State women’s basketball program on Tuesday night as the Rambelles fell 76-67 at the Junell Center–Stephens Arena.

The loss drops the Belles to 5-9 overall and 3-5 in Lone Star Conference play.

Angelo State shot 37.5% from the field, including 38.9% from 3-point range, and went 75% from the free-throw line. UT Permian Basin countered with 51% shooting overall and 47.6% from beyond the arc while outrebounding the Rambelles 36-29.

Majik Esquivel led Angelo State with 20 points, scoring 10 from the free-throw line, and added a game-high four steals.

Landry Morrow finished with 16 points, a team-high seven rebounds and five assists.

Taylor Grona, Kenna Wood and Halle Hughes scored seven points apiece. Grona added four rebounds, while Wood recorded two blocks.

The Angelo State men’s basketball team snapped its three-game losing streak with an 80-77 win over UT Permian Basin on Tuesday evening inside the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.

The Rams, who held the lead for most of the contest, fell behind by four points with 1:53 left in the game. A clutch three-pointer by Kailon Nicholls cut the lead to a single point before Jhordan Ryan blocked a Falcon layup to give the ball back to the Rams.

Jesaiah McWright found Zyon Little for a layup with 44 seconds left to put the Rams ahead. The Rams’ defense stepped up in the ensuing possession, forcing a turnover. Davon Scott sank the free throws to give the Rams a three-point lead, and the Falcons missed a corner three at the buzzer as the Rams secured the win.

The Rams’ offense shot 50 percent from the field and 35 percent from three. The Rams controlled the game on the boards, out-rebounding UT Permian Basin 40-30.

Little led all players with 19 points, shooting 8-for-10 from the field and making three three-pointers. His point total is one off his career high, and he recorded a double-double with ten rebounds, his first of the season.
